Postal Questionnaire 2025
Invitation letters have been sent out asking study members to complete a short postal questionnaire.
What is the purpose of this study?
We are keen to hear from study members every few years to keep up-to-date with how their life and health is changing. This questionnaire is to find out how they are coping physically and mentally, as well as what support is being accessed.
What does the study involve?
The study will involve completing a short postal questionnaire about health, family and social life. It should take about 15 minutes.
Answering the questionnaire is voluntary. Questions can be skipped over if you cannot answer or would prefer not to answer.
Who will be invited?
We will be recruiting active NSHD study members for whom we have addresses for.
If you are an NSHD study member and have not received an invitation letter and would like to take part, please get in touch with the study team.

Do I have to take part?
Like all of our surveys, it is completely voluntary whether or not you choose to take part. You can skip any questions that you would rather not answer.
Why should I take part?
Taking part in the study is a chance to represent your generation, and to inform the support and services available in the future. The study will inform and improve policy in areas such as mental and physical health and health care services.
Who should I contact if I have any problems, queries or concerns?
If you have any problems, queries or concerns, you can call us for free on 0800 952 0249 or email us at mrclha.enquiries@ucl.ac.uk.
What happens to the information I give?
The information you give us will be held securely and treated in strict confidence in accordance with the Data Protection Act 2018 and the General Data Protection Regulation. Any information that may identify you, such as your name, your contact details and the contact details of anyone else you give us, will be kept separate from responses to any other questions you have answered. We hold any information which could identify you securely and never make this available to researchers.

Can I do the survey if I have not taken part for a while?
Yes! We’d like everyone to take part for each data collection wave. But it’s up to you to decide whether or not to take part each time. If you miss a survey, you can still remain in the study and do the next survey.
Even if you haven’t taken part for a while, we would love you to take part again. There’s a lot we can learn from how your lives have changed since you last took part even if we don’t have all the details of your life in between.
Each survey is important because we focus on different aspects of your lives each time we get in touch. The more information that the study gathers about your life over time, the more valuable it becomes. This is why we so value your unique and continued contribution.
If you are not sure about whether to take part or if you have any questions about taking part, please do not hesitate to contact us. We really value your contribution and are always happy to talk to you and answer any questions you have.
Why are you not sending out an online questionnaire?
During covid we had a brilliant response to the online questionnaires, with 74% of study members completing the COVID questionnaires online. However this dropped down to just 15% for the 2022 questionnaire.
The way the questions are asked, and the layout, is different between the online and the paper version, which could potentially lead to differences in the way people answer the questions. To make sure we don’t have any bias due to type of questionnaire, we have only sent out a paper version.
My contact details need updating. How can I do this?
